-How to Paint a Lampshade: Painting Fabric

My inspiration is not a Lamp Shade, it is a Chair.

I just loved the teal color

The smart and talented Kristy from
hypheninteriors painted her chairs, and I loved the idea but I have no place at home for one more chair, not even one. So I kept on looking at those nasty chairs in my garage, but there is no way I can add one chair to my home without making my place crowded.

So after sleepless nights ( yes yes I’m having lately so many sleepless nights after I got addicted to DIY projects) I finally got a good idea: PAINTING A LAMP SHADE. I wanted to try painting fabrics so why not a fabric of a lampshade!

I had this lamp shade for several months, first I wanted to recover it with fabric, but his hexagonal shape scared me so I kept on postponing the project.

So painting it was better and cheaper:

1- I used acrylic paint and since the yellow was so bright I mixed it with off-white latex paint.

2- I watered the lampshade with a wet brush.

3- I painted it 3 coats.

It was too bright so I added off-white latex paint to tone it down

After one coat of paint

4- I ruffled a ribbon.

5- I attached the ribbon with hot glue, but I’m thinking about removing the top ruffle and just keeping the flower , what do you think?

I applied silver leaf to the base of the lamp

Update: Thanks to you girls, I removed the ruffle just left the flower, Now I LOVE IT

Since I loved the way it turned out and how easy it was, one day I will be painting this chair 🙂

  1. Another cute lampshade tut! Yours turned out lovely. 😀 I did a mod podge with fabric lampshade a couple of weeks ago which ended up with MORE views than my top 4 posts of all time… combined. I'm sure yours will too- it's AWESOME!

Thanks for sharing while I visiting from the Shabby Nest Linky Party today,

  2. Who would'ave ever thought of painting a lampshade…..? What us bloggers won't do for a quick change, huh? lol! That lamp turned out so stinkin' cute, I can't believe it! 🙂

  3. I new though about painting a lampshade, but you may have just started a new trend!

Thanks so much for linking to Potpourri Friday. You participation is appreciated.

  4. Oh how pretty! I'm working on painting one now in a dry brush of ivory on dark green and adding ivory ribbon knotted and draped all over it…we'll see if i flub up lol. love yours. the dry brush is giving it a dull green burlap look.

  5. What a BEAUTIFUL lamp!!!! The flower is the perfect touch. I spray painted a shade once but it made the fabric brittle and cracked. I'll have to try your method. And can't wait to see the chair when you're done!!

  6. The lamp looks great. Love the color! i am seriously in love with the curtains you have the lamp next to. Stopping by from show me what ya got link up.

  7. LOVE..LOVE..LOVE…THE IDEA!! Just went thru a terrible divorce and I am starting over. I have purchased a lot of lamps at garage sales that are all mismatched. Now I can paint the lampshades very easily to coordinate with each room..THANK YOU!!!!!!
